Principessa left me stunned, full and excited for a fantastic new Italian eatery tucked in SoHo. This under the radar spot that provides a perfect night out seven days a week. You can make it as casual as you want with a drink at the bar or dress up for a nigh on the town and snag a seat in the back by the chef’s table. The staff is very personable and truly “begs” of you to enjoy your experience as they are very passionate about the food. The menu might not look like anything out of the ordinary at first glance, but when you put the fresh Chopped Salad and Bolognese to your lips, you might forget you’re not at a Mario Batali restaurant.
Ok, a little exaggerated, but the Tagliatelle Bolognese sauce is addicting and you’ll want to eat it with the spoon. I loved the fresh Chopped Salad which stands out amongst your usual salad joints. It’s a large portion and would be an ideal lunch to pick-up if you work in the neighborhood. The Grilled Truffle Pizza (1st pic) scent lurks in the room and is probably at every table but it was just average. The Fried Brussels Sprouts are huge and too tart and vinegary for me. However, the Chocolate Cake took my breath away and I couldn’t put my fork down. I’ve had my fair of chocolate cakes in this city and molten cake will never be my favorite, but somehow the chef here makes what seems like a gooey molten cake appear much denser and moist as that of a real cake. The gelato is a bit icy which lightens and compliments the rich dish. It’s unforgettable and might be one of the best I’ve ever had. You WILL get this cake.
There wasn’t much turnover on a Friday night at Principessa which is utterly shocking. This is a perfect downtown establishment and the portions are ideal for sharing so you can try several dishes for a nice price. Come here for a group dinner, a date, cocktails with the girls or for post-work drinks. It’s easy and not a “to-do” like other downtown restaurants can be.
